Ravi Shankar
Presented by La Philharmonic Association. Entertainers: Ravi Shankar, Tanmoy Bose, Samir Chatterjee, Ravichandra Kulur, Parimal Sadaphal, Kenji Ota, Courtney Grueschow. Examined September 29, 2011.Ravi Shankar, the actual sitarist largely accountable for distributing the term about Indian music outdoors of India - along with a patriarch of immense influence in lots of genres - walked gradually having a stick, but under their own energy, towards the platform around the Wally Disney Concert Hall stage Thursday evening. The applause was thunderous. Finally, the faithful were compensated for his or her persistence and perseverance, for that route to this concert was lengthy and torturous. The initially scheduled March. 20, 2010 date ended up being to happen to be a part of a Shankar 90th special birthday, supported by retrospective Compact disc boxes from Deutsche Grammophon and Rhino, as well as an economical EMI two-fer, "The Most Effective Of Ravi Shankar." The albums arrived on the scene, however the concert didn't, for Shankar was instructed to cancel in the last second because of illness. It had been re-scheduled for Apr. 19 of the year, but Shankar drawn out again, among his music artists had visa problems. The 3rd attempt been successful, by now, the concert had be a 91st special birthday - minus Shankar's sitarist daughter and heir Anoushka, who just were built with a baby, however with a consort of skilled Indian music artists surrounding him. Shankar presently has a complete whitened beard ("I think you'll recognize me because I have acquired a few pounds - here!" he quipped, pointing to his face), and that he sitting close to the woking platform rather than within the traditional, physically-taxing mix-legged position around the rug. Inevitably, age has turned into a significant element in his playing - far much more than even at his appearance in Disney Hall only 5 years ago. He appears to stay with the center register from the sitar, staying away from the bass and also the treble extremes. There's now merely a minimum quantity of the significant string-bending and employ of microtones that provide Indian music its emotional tug - and just briefly fleeting bursts of how quickly he once taken off the notes. But,the guy can continue to have beautiful music within limited physical limitations and shorter time spans. As with 2006, Shankar performed for pretty much an hour or so-and-a-half, getting audibly more powerful because he went, pointing the way in which. In a single number, he moderate a few of the strings on his instrument, hammering in it percussively together with his right hands while plucking other strings inside a different rhythm together with his left -an ambidextrous task. For a lot of the concert, the seem mix was uneven you could not hear the flute of Ravichandra Kulur and Parimal Sadaphal's second sitar was strictly consigned towards the background. But within the last 10 mins from the final, half-hour-lengthy spring season raga composed of folk tunes from around India, everything began to get together:the balances, the rhythmic momentum, the phone call-and-response chemistry between Shankar, Sadaphal and also the two tabla gamers Tanmoy Bose and Samir Chatterjee. The truly amazing entertainers more often than not discover a way. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Tom Cruise is becoming Who Are Old Enough to Star in 'Cocoon,' Literally
Wilford Brimley switched 77-years old on Tuesday, which introduced to several people around Moviefone HQ asking, "Wait, Wilford Brimley is simply 77-years old?Inch He's. And what's really very useful about Brimley's age is always that Tom Cruise -- who'll once again play super agent Ethan Search in December's 'Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol' -- is similar age that Brimley used to be the Quaker Oats pitchman shot 'Cocoon.' Let me repeat for effect: Tom Cruise -- starring in 'Mission Impossible 4' -- is similar age that Wilford Brimley reaches 'Cocoon.' In the event you haven't seen it shortly, 'Cocoon' might be the storyline of countless senior citizens pals who -- due to some helpful alien intervention -- are re-vitalized with youth. The 1985 film starred 76-year-old Don Ameche, 73-year-old Hume Cronyn, 76-year-old Jack Gilford, 75-year-old Jessica Tandy and Brimley because the amount of senior citizens pals. Oh, funny factor relating to this: Supposing almost all 'Cocoon' was shot in 1984, Brimley only agreed to be 49 in those days! I question what that conversation was like between Brimley and director Ron Howard: "Hey, Wilford, I'd enjoy you to definitely remain in 'Cocoon.'" "The film in regards to the senior citizens people? Let me, Ron. Had you been thinking I'd function as guy while using boat who helps the senior citizens people? "No, no. We now have already hired Steve Guttenberg." "Oh... do you want me being the alien?" "Nah. We've John Dennehy for the. That which you want is you should play one of the senior citizens people." "You must do understand that i'm only four years older than Dennehy, right?" So happy belated birthday, Wilford! Oh, and congratulations, Tom Cruise, for still playing an action star within the same age that Brimley required to instantly reach another planet to ward-off final years. "Your mother's a whore," he continued, referring to former vp candidate Sarah Palin. "If there were a hell -- which I don't believe there is one -- she will be there." "Is it because you're a homosexual?" Palin retorted. How about brushing up on your political insults before you decide to confront the 20-something year old DAUGHTER of a former vice-presidential candidate. Recap: The X Factor Night 2 More Than Just A Singing Competition
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The X Factor wrapped up its premiere week on American television on Thursday night and if theres one thing the audience learned after the shows second night on the air its that The X Factor is more than just a singing competition. After dozens of uncomforatble auditions in Miami, the judging panel Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, L.A. Reid and Nicole Scherzinger (Cheryl Cole judged just the Los Angeles round) found someone to put through in 21-year-old Nick Voss, but it wasnt necessarily because of his vocal abilities. L.A. said as much when he voted to put the performer through, based on his stage presence, which featured a mix of Elvis and Michael Jackson-inspired moves, the latter of which Paula said to leave behind in the next round. Keep being unique, lose the Michael Jackson choreography, she said. But if you perform like you did, thats what people pay money for and if you can translate that into working harder on your vocals, thats what gets me excited. Melanie Amaro, 18, didnt have dance moves, but she didnt need them. The powerful singer belted out Listen by Beyonce, as cameras panned to L.A., who deeply felt her rendition. Melanie, you are truly amazing, honey, the former record executive said. You have the gift You have The X Factor. Paula too recognized Melanies talent, bestowing a great, great compliment on the young woman. You have a unique ability, unlike anything weve heard, she said. I dont think its like anything Ive ever heard in any audition that Ive ever been in. The talent was more bountiful in the second audition city featured on Thursdays show Dallas where they found 49-year-old Dexter Haywood. The singer managed to sway the panel after an impromptu performance of Its A Mans Mans Mans World. You have soul, Simon said as the full panel put him through. He was quickly followed by the Scarlett Johansson look-a-like, Caitlyn Cook, a 21-year-old rugby player and coach. Paula called her voice authentic, while Nicole said it would be an honor to work with her. The final contestant of the night Xander Alexander had some trouble finding his pitch (actually, a lot of trouble), and came with plenty of attitude mostly directed at Simon but he was nearly put through anyway. Youre lippy, gobby, but interesting, Simon said after receiving an earful from the contestant. I actually think you, on stage, with a full production, would potentially be very good. So I like you. Still, his attitude, and inability to find the melody, stopped Xander short. You got the audience to hate you by the end of the audition, Simon said. The minute anyone criticizes you, you turn into a b****y diva. You blew it. The X Factor returns on Wednesday at 8/7 C on FOX. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. 2 Broke Women
Jesse Behrs and Kat Dennings in "2 Broke Women"
Shot in La by Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers, Michael Patrick King, Whitney Cummings producer, Tim Kaiser director, James Burrows authors, King, Cummings.Max Black - Kat Dennings
Caroline Channing - Jesse Behrs
Earl - Garrett Morris
Han Lee - Matthew Moy
Oleg - Jonathan KiteTaking inventory of the assets and debits, "2 Broke Women" has appealing co-stars, a quite functional premise, considerable raunch, a great time-slot then one natural problem: While CBS has loved solid success having its Monday comedies, programs centered by female leads generally were not incorporated within this. Whether "Women" can reverse that trend remains to look, and may possibly depend simply how handsomely the completely new-look "two and a half Males" does to keep an audience -- and propping within the entire evening -- beyond its inevitable initial hurry appealing. The Interest network has apparently acquired a coup by landing Kat Dennings as Max, a blunt, sexy, cash-strapped Manhattan waitress introduced placing a couple of grubby patrons inside their place, telling one dude that getting upset his fingers to demand service "dries up my vagina." In walks Caroline (Jesse Behrs), the blond, leggy, Paris Hilton-like heiress with a fortune that has disappeared faster than you'll be able to say "Bernie Madoff." (In the programming perspective, due to the plot of "Damages" last season together with an identical wrinkle in ABC's "G.C.B.," the Madoff scandal is nearly the narrative gift that continues giving.) Perky but impoverished, Caroline takes a job, which doesn't exactly provoke cartwheels from Max. Still, she requires an amount of pity on her behalf account, after grilling her in what it's want to be wealthy and possess a pony. The 2 will finish off living together, "Odd Couple" style, is not uncertain. Still, producers Michael Patrick King ("Sex as well as the City") and Whitney Cummings (whose prospects looks substantially better here in comparison to her new NBC sitcom) -- aided with the sure hands of pilot maestro James Burrows -- still be capable of have a great time getting there. "Oh my gosh God, you're conned!" Caroline shouts upon her first look at Max's sparsely furnished apartment. Beyond the well-cast leads -- with Dennings experiencing the meatier role but Behrs holding her own -- the show distinguishes itself when you're nearly as dirty as "Males," although in the female perspective, with numerous lascivious sighing in regards to the chiseled abs from the guy Max is dating. Furthermore, you will find broad (otherwise especially strong) comic relief, including "Saturday Evening Live" original Garrett Morris and Matthew Moy since the diner's owner. Much less naughtiness alone will probably be enough to secure "Girls'?" future where it counts, or alone increase the risk for show appear like one of the boys. Still, when the promising half-hour finally appears short on Nielsen's balance sheet, it won't be due to a deficit of a person's or charm.Camera, Gary Baum production designer, Glenda Rovello editor, Peter Chakos casting, Julie Ashton. 30 MIN. 'Source Code' to Be Adapted for TV at CBS (Exclusive)
Calling from his dressing room on the Fox lot, where he was about to don glasses and mustache for the taping of what he jokingly called "a very dramatic, subtle episode" of his CBS sitcom, Neil Patrick Harris, 38, took some time to speak with THR about working to the brink of "oversaturating" and receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, September 15.our editor recommendsEmmy Roundtable: Comedy ActorsHost Neil Patrick Harris on Tony Awards: 'Book of Mormon' Is a Problem for Show Censors (Q&A) The Hollywood Reporter: Is being funny innate or is it something that can be learned? Neil Patrick Harris: Timing is innate, but one can learn to be funny. It's not difficult to make someone laugh. What's trickier is to keep people laughing. THR: You sing, you act, you host, you direct. What can't you do? Harris: I'm not the best writer. I'm a very good rewriter and a good fixer, but when it comes to sitting at a blank computer screen with Final Draft in front of me, I can't seem to purge much content. THR: How did your love of musical theater develop? Harris: I was a kid living in a tiny New Mexico town when cassette tapes were turning into CDs. With cast albums came these booklets that showed pictures of the productions and the librettos of the musicals. They gave me a window into what that world must be like. I memorized the songs and imagined seeing the shows. They sparked a creative escapism that I wasn't afforded back in football-centric New Mexico. STORY: Neil Patrick Harris: 5 Things to Know About the 'Smurfs' Star THR: And you weren't into football. Harris: I was a little small for linebacker. THR: Who are your comedy idols? Harris: Christopher Guest, Tim Conway, Buster Keaton, Vince Vaughn, John Ritter. VIDEO: Emmy Roundtable: Comedy Actors THR: You like physical comedy, then. Harris: I do! It's so quote-unquote easy and base --but it requires agility. You have to be a couple of steps ahead in your mind when you're doing it. Body awareness is key. THR: What's more of a challenge: Drama or comedy? Harris: Comedy. What people find funny is so subjective. You have to -- at least on our show -- hit as many different types of funny at the same time as you can. If you're just goofball funny, that will turn off intellectual types. If you're just highbrow, wordplay funny, then you'll shut out the workers who come home to sit and guffaw at the fat guy and the hot wife. THR: What genre of acting have you not yet tackled that you'd like to? Harris: Something hyper-dramatic like a Chris Nolan movie. My stuff tends to be more glib and comfortable casual acting. I don't do a lot of intense things. STORY: Tony Awards: What Critics Say About Neil Patrick Harris THR: This TV development season has been chock full of reboots. If you could remake and star in any past series, which would it be? Harris: There's an old show called The Magician that Bill Bixby starred in on NBC back in the '60s. To revive that would be kick-ass. THR: You directed a pilot for CBS this past pilot season and were attached to direct a feature film called Aaron & Sarah. Do you have plans to do more? Harris: Yes, but I only have three and a half months a year to do it during my hiatus from Mother. Aaron & Sarah didn't happen because of scheduling. THR: What was the appeal of doing The Smurfs and The Muppets? Harris: It's important as an actor to be as broad in your demographics as you can. I'm grateful that I get to do Mother, which honors one big audience, but I'm also allowed the Harold & Kumar films and Smurfs all at the same time. That's the career I've been angling for -- trying to hit on as many cylinders as I can without oversaturating my market. Plus, I'm a huge fan of the Muppets, and I just begged [Mother co-star and Muppets writer and star] Jason [Segel] to have a cameo in it. FILM REVIEW: The Smurfs THR: What do you think about the Walk of Fame honor? Harris: It's flattering. I used to wander the streets of Hollywood looking at the stars when I was a kid -- though that makes it sound like I was homeless, which I wasn't ... for long. Michele Bachmann Probably Not Accepting Harvey Weinstein's Butter Invitation
Tea Party presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann has an unlikely suitor in studio chief and liberal patron Harvey Weinstein, who issued a statement Tuesday night inviting the Minnesota congresswoman to her native Iowa for the U.S. premiere of his satire Butter. The Bachmann campaign hasn’t responded to Movieline’s request for comment, but let it suffice to say — based on Butter’s send-up of the archconservative Midwestern competitive spirit and the verbiage read by co-star Olivia Wilde prior to the film’s gala Toronto Film Festival premiere — she probably won’t be attending: “In 20 years of coming to the Toronto Film Festival, I’ve never released a statement for a film. But I would like to take this moment to formally invite Republican Congresswoman from Minnesota and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann to co-host with me the big premiere of Butter in Iowa in a few months from now. I know Michele will already be in Iowa for the caucus, so we can save some money on airfare and travel. I would, of course, be more than happy to fly in the other leading members of the Tea Party movement to make an entire day of it. We could take some math classes in the morning to help balance the budget, brush up on the Constitution in the afternoon, play some ping-pong, and then maybe some verbal ping-pong on gay rights and women’s rights (especially the right to choose). But at night we can all go hand-in-hand to the premiere of Butter, a fun and important film where we’ll share some popcorn and laughs. These are the kind of bipartisan effort that makes America great. I look forward to hearing from Michele, and I’m particularly looking forward to those classes on the Constitution. All my best, Harvey.” Harvey! That rascal! This doesn’t quite rival that rollicking Blue Valentine/NC-17 publicity stunt from last year, but it’s good to see the old boy staying hungry and creative. · Harvey Weinstein Pokes Fun at Michele Bachmann and Tea Party Before Butter Screening [THR]
